Former deputy of the Supreme Council Mikalai Markevich detained in Hrodna. His company is engaged in passenger transportation. He was arrested on Tuesday at his office. Human rights activists suggest the GUBOPiK unit carried out the arrest.
In the 1990s, Markevich was the founder and editor-in-chief of the Pahonia newspaper. He participated in a hunger strike of opposition parliamentary deputies in 1995. In 2002, he was sentenced to two years in an open type institution on charges of 'slander' the leader of the country. He was the head of the Hrodna group of the Belarusian Language Society.
