US Ambassador Summoned To Chinese Foreign Ministry

It is the first PRC's demarche at such a level since December 2018.

US Ambassador to China Nicholas Burns has been summoned to the Chinese Foreign Ministry. The reason was a visit to Taiwan by speaker of the United States House of Representatives Nancy Pelosi.

It is noted that Chinese Deputy Foreign Minister Xie Feng "conveyed stern statements" against Pelosi's visit.

"The US must pay the price for its mistakes. China will firmly take countermeasures and we will do as we say," he said.

At the same time, the diplomat urged Washington to make immediate adjustments and take practical measures to address the negative impact of Pelosi's visit to Taiwan.

Xie warned that the US should stop interfering in China's internal affairs and not go further down the wrong and dangerous path.

Incidentally, this is the first time since December 2018 that the US ambassador has been summoned in China. Back then, it came against the backdrop of the detention of Huawei's CFO, which the US declared involved in industrial espionage.
