They urge to bring Lukashenka to justice.
The European Parliament's plenary in Strasbourg, on December 14, adopted a resolution with a demand to release Mikalai Stakevich, the leader of the Belarusian opposition, and other political prisoners. A correspondent of Charter97.org reports.
Point number one in the resolution is the demand to release the 2010 presidential candidate, laureate of the 2020 Sakharov Prize of the European Parliament, Mikalai Statkevich, about whom there has been no information for more than 300 days: “Parliament demands the immediate and unconditional release of Mikalai Statkevich and all the political prisoners in Belarus. Parliament calls for all charges against them to be dropped, as well as for their full rehabilitation and financial compensation for the damage caused as a result of deprivation of liberty,” the resolution reads.
In addition to Mikalai Statkevich, MEPs named some political prisoners: Ales Bialiatski, Marya Kalesnikava, Siarhei Tsikhanouski, Viktar Babaryka, Maksim Znak, Pavel Seviarynets, Palina Sherenda-Panasiuk, Andrzej Poczobut, Ihar Losik.
The European Parliament "insists that these political prisoners must receive necessary medical care and access to lawyers, relatives, diplomats and international organizations so that they can assess their condition and provide assistance."
The MEPs regret the inaction of the International Red Cross in Belarus.
The MEPs condemn the ongoing repression and express solidarity with the Belarusian people in the struggle for a free, sovereign and democratic Belarus.
The European Parliament "renews its call to hold accountable and punish all those who violated human rights and committed war crimes under the Lukashenka regime."
