A number of candidates have been named who are ready to challenge the controversial official.
European soccer officials are secretly searching for a candidate capable of challenging Gianni Infantino in the FIFA presidential election. Until recently, it seemed that the organization’s current head would be re-elected unopposed, writes The Telegraph (translation by Charter97.org).
Two sources have confirmed behind-the-scenes negotiations regarding the nomination of an alternative candidate. His name is being deliberately withheld so that Infantino’s team cannot prepare in advance for the competition. The deadline for submitting applications is November 18.
“The stakes are too high,” said one of the publication’s sources, declining to name a potential contender.
Among those previously considered as rivals to Infantino were CONCACAF President Victor Montagliani, the head of the Norwegian Football Federation Lise Klavennes, former “Arsenal” coach Arsène Wenger, and former Portugal national team star Luís Figo. However, some of them have already ruled out running, while Montagliani has focused on seeking re-election as head of his confederation.
Infantino’s position has been weakened by scandals surrounding FIFA’s commercial deals and reports of a possible undeclared payment of 1.54 million euros. In addition, the organization’s relationship with UEFA has deteriorated sharply. UEFA is preparing a lawsuit against Infantino in Switzerland.
Despite this, Infantino has managed to secure the support of most national soccer associations. Experts call his political survival a true “Houdini act,” but the emergence of a single rival could change the course of the election campaign.
