The Swedish Parliament Rejected Magdalena Andersson's Nomination For Prime Minister
Magdalena Andersson

Ulf Kristersson, the head of the interim government, could be the next candidate.

Members of the Swedish Riksdag (parliament) voted against the appointment of Social Democratic Workers' Party Chair Magdalena Andersson as prime minister. According to the parliament’s press office, 99 members voted in favor and 248 voted against.

Parliament Speaker Andreas Norlén will soon begin discussing other candidates with party leaders. If Parliament votes against the next three candidates, the law requires that special elections be held in the Riksdag within three months. According to Reuters, the next candidate could be Ulf Kristersson—the head of the interim government.

Following the September elections, the center-left bloc (the Swedish Social Democratic Party, the Left Party, the Green Party, and the Center Party) won 176 seats, while the right-liberal alliance led by incumbent Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson (the Moderate Party, the Liberals, the “Christian Democrats,” and the “Swedish Democrats”) received 174.
In late September, the leader of the center-left bloc, Magdalena Andersson, returned the mandate to form a government. She explained her decision by noting that the left had supported the candidacy of Parliament Speaker Andreas Norlén, while the other members of the bloc intended to vote for the Social Democratic candidate.
