Republican Senator Darlene Graham spoke out against Trump over his lenient stance toward Russia.
U.S. Senator Darlene Graham, who succeeded her late brother Lindsey Graham in the Senate, called for increasing sanctions pressure on Russia after U.S. President Donald Trump eased restrictions against Moscow, according to The New York Times (translation by Charter97.org).
Lindsey Graham was one of the sponsors of the sanctions bill against Russia and Iran, which is named after him. Darlene stated that she would prefer to increase pressure on the Kremlin to bring an end to the war and lower fuel prices. “I don’t trust Putin or Russia,” the senator added.
The bill provides for sanctions against the Russian energy sector, oligarchs, officials, and financial institutions, as well as the extension of restrictive measures against Iran.
At the same time, the bill grants the White House broad authority to grant exemptions from the sanctions regime. The Trump administration has exercised this authority and recently temporarily lifted sanctions on Russian diesel fuel.
The president’s decision has also drawn criticism from other Republicans. Senators Tom Tillis and John Cornyn sharply criticized the move.
Darlene Graham herself is trying to strengthen her political standing by focusing on domestic issues in the U.S. and the sanctions agenda.
Against the backdrop of rising fuel prices, Democrats hope to make the upcoming election campaign more competitive.
