The Ukrainian president hopes that the U.S. will reconsider its decisions.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy stated that the actions of Donald Trump’s administration appear to be an attempt to force Kyiv to capitulate to Russia. He made these remarks on Sunday, October 18, in an interview Bloomberg. On NBC, Zelenskyy called U.S. support for Vladimir Putin a “historic mistake” and expressed hope that Trump would reconsider his decisions.
According to Zelenskyy, Kyiv had proposed refraining from strikes on Russian oil refineries in exchange for the delivery of missiles for the Patriot systems, which are needed to protect Ukraine’s civilian infrastructure. Washington, however, is demanding an end to strikes on Russian oil refineries without any reciprocal commitments and is threatening to limit other aid.
The Ukrainian leader also reported that Ukraine has paid for part of the weapons under the PURL program, including interceptor missiles for the Patriot system, but some deliveries have not yet been approved. According to Zelenskyy, the reason is not technical issues. He said that the U.S. is currently supplying Ukraine with about 12 Patriot interceptor missiles per month, which is roughly a quarter of the volume during the Joe Biden administration, when the weapons were provided free of charge.
At the same time, Zelenskyy remains in contact with U.S. Special Envoys Steve Whitcoff and Jared Kushner. The parties recently discussed the possibility of a new meeting, which may take place next week. The Ukrainian president also expressed hope that after the U.S. congressional elections, political tensions will ease and relations between the two countries will become more stable.
