In the Lithuanian municipality of Druskininkai, two undocumented migrants from Belarus attempted to enter Lithuania through a culvert under a stream.
This was reported by LRT, citing the Lithuanian State Border Guard Service.
According to the Lithuanian Border Guard Service, border guards detected two people approaching from Belarus earlier in the day using a video surveillance system.
The migrants attempted to enter Lithuania through a pipe with a diameter of about 2.8 meters, through which the Kusenka Stream flows from Belarus.
According to the agency, the intruders were carrying metal shears, which they likely intended to use to cut through the metal gate installed at the end of the pipe.
The migrants remained inside the pipe for just over a minute before retreating back to Belarus.
The agency does not rule out the possibility that, upon seeing the sturdy gate, the migrants realized they would not be able to cut through it with the metal shears they had with them. It is also believed that they may have heard the sound of border guards’ SUVs approaching.
Border guards who arrived at the scene inspected the pipe gate and deployed a service drone to survey the area. No other violations were detected.
As a reminder, on the night of October 5–6, aggressive, armed men wearing masks attempted to smuggle 20 illegal migrants from Belarus to Latvia. The individuals accompanying the migrants threatened military personnel, who prevented them from crossing the border. A few hours later, the masked men entered Latvian territory and damaged infrastructure.
