NATO Critics Have Been Caught Repeating The Kremlin's Talking Points About Ukraine

Analysis by the Financial Times.

American critics of NATO are increasingly echoing the Kremlin’s talking points, attributing Russia’s invasion of Ukraine to “Western actions” and portraying Kyiv as a “pawn” in the confrontation between the great powers. Such views are spreading among both supporters of the MAGA movement and those on the left, who blame the U.S. for global conflicts and see Russia as a counterweight to American influence, writes Financial Times (translation by Charter97.org).

One of the most influential proponents of this position is political scientist John Mearsheimer, a representative of the school of so-called offensive realism. He argues that great powers seek to dominate their regions and that NATO’s expansion “provoked Moscow” into war. These arguments are also echoed in the remarks of right-wing commentator Tucker Carlson.

However, Russia’s invasion in 2022 did not occur as a direct result of NATO’s expansion. For years, Ukraine had been unable to secure membership in the alliance. Putin himself justified the attack as necessary for the “denazification” and “demilitarization” of Ukraine, while simultaneously calling into question Ukraine’s right to exist as an independent state.

A week before the full-scale invasion began, Mearsheimer predicted that Putin would not attack. After the war began, he changed his position, stating that “the West left Putin no choice.”

Similar arguments were put forward by the left-wing NATO critic Noam Chomsky, who called the flight of former Ukrainian President Viktor Yanukovych a “coup d’état.” Yet Yanukovych left the country following mass protests and the loss of political support.

Such interpretations ignore the autonomy of Ukrainians and their right to determine their country’s future. Against the backdrop of reduced U.S. support for Kyiv, these views help justify concessions to Moscow, while the security of Ukraine and its European allies is put at risk.
