The car will be able to point out traffic signs that you didn't have time to read.

Ford has filed a patent application for technology that will photograph road signs and billboards and display their images on the car's screen. This will help drivers find information they might have missed about gas stations, hotels, and rest areas.

This was reported by Autoblog.

The patent was published on October 15. The design calls for the use of external cameras, which are already standard equipment in modern cars. Instead of simply recognizing road signs, the system will be able to photograph them and save the images for later viewing.

The images can be accessed via the central touchscreen. A dedicated button, voice command, or gesture control is provided for this purpose. In the patent, Ford Global Technologies describes a replay mode for road signs that will allow drivers to revisit a sign even after they have already passed it.

This technology could be useful during long highway trips. For example, passengers will be able to see a restaurant advertisement, a hotel name, a sign for a gas station, or the distance to the nearest rest area. If the sign indicates how many kilometers remain to the desired location, the driver will be able to prepare for the stop in advance.

The system will tag each image with the time it was taken and, when possible, GPS coordinates. In the Ford example, images are saved for the last 15 minutes, though this time frame can be adjusted.

In the future, this feature may be integrated with AI-based voice assistants. For example, a passenger could ask where the nearest rest area is, and the system would locate the corresponding recently captured sign.

To avoid distracting the driver, the patent specifies that only passengers will be able to view photos on the screen. However, Ford has not yet named specific models in which this technology might be available.

Currently, the automaker already uses a speed limit recognition system. It reads relevant road signs and transmits the information to the adaptive cruise control system, which can automatically adjust the vehicle’s speed. The new development has a broader range of applications, as it will also cover other informational signs and billboards.

However, filing a patent application does not mean that the technology will necessarily go into mass production. Before implementation, Ford will need to assess demand, find partners to work with on data and software, and address privacy concerns.
