A column of black smoke rose after a powerful explosion.

In Cedar Rapids, Iowa, an explosion occurred at the Quaker Oats Company plant—part of PepsiCo—which led to a major fire. The fire engulfed part of a building located on the manufacturing complex’s grounds, but people were quickly evacuated. This was reported by the American news agency Associated Press (AP).

At this time, it is known that the Cedar Rapids Fire Department received the call at approximately 4:45 p.m. local time.

Witnesses to the incident reported that an explosion was heard before smoke appeared. Subsequently, a large cloud of black smoke rose above the facility, which was visible from various parts of the city, which has a population of about 140,000.

All employees of the facility were evacuated. According to emergency responders, at approximately 5:30 p.m. on Saturday, the fire department confirmed that all employees were safe.

Cedar Rapids Mayor Tiffany O’Donnell also reported that no one was injured. She explained that the fire broke out in the part of the building where finished products are handled, and therefore there are usually relatively few employees there.

“There aren’t that many employees or team members there. In this case, that certainly worked in our favor,” O’Donnell said, commenting on the circumstances of the incident in a video statement cited by the AP.

According to the fire department, traces of an explosion were found at the scene, which was followed by the fire. However, there is currently no confirmed information about what exactly caused the explosion or the full extent of the damage to the production facility. Therefore, it is premature to speak of a specific technical malfunction or any other cause of the incident.
