Zelenskyy explained how Palisa resigned from his post as ambassador to the U.S.
Among the candidates for the position of Ukrainian ambassador to the U.S. who have been discussed by government officials are former Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba, former Prime Minister Yulia Sviridenko, and Deputy Head of the Office of the President Pavlo Palisa. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy announced this during a conversation with journalists, according to “Ukrinform” on October 28.
“We discussed the candidacies of Yulia Sviridenko, Dmytro Kuleba, and Pavlo Palisa, because he has an American education and language skills—there’s a lot of work to be done on military issues specifically—and [U.S. President Donald] Trump knows him. Palisa would make a good ambassador, but he doesn’t want the job. He said: ‘Send me to the front; send me back to the brigade immediately. I’m not leaving Ukraine,”” Zelenskyy said.
It is unknown how the discussion of Sviridenko and Kuleba’s candidacies concluded. According to Zelenskyy, consultations are ongoing.
In August, media outlets reported on Palisa’s possible appointment as ambassador to the U.S., but he himself said that he could not serve in both the military and the diplomatic corps at the same time. Resigning from military service in order to become an ambassador, according to the general, contradicts his “moral and life principles.”
“During wartime, I must be here, in my country. Therefore, the only way I can travel to the U.S. is for training,” Palisa added.
Palisa is a brigadier general; prior to his appointment to the Presidential Office, he was commander of the 93rd Separate Mechanized Brigade “Kholodny Yar.” He became deputy head of the Presidential Office in November 2024, reports “Gordon”.
Palisa has visited the U.S. on multiple occasions as part of the Ukrainian delegation, notably during Zelenskyy’s visit to Washington last summer (when he brought maps to the White House illustrating the situation on the battlefield), as well as this summer at the NATO summit in Turkey. At that time, Trump, to everyone’s surprise, admitted that he admires Palisa.
“Look at this guy. He’s one of my favorite soldiers. I see him. He looks like he’s straight out of a casting call for a leading role. Handsome, isn’t he?” he said, asking how things were going for the Ukrainian general. The general replied that everything was fine, and Trump continued: “We see him at meetings. He’s done a wonderful job. A wonderful job. All of us. A great, great hero.”
