696 cars and 7.6 kilometers long.
In the Republic of South Africa, a 7.6-kilometer-long freight train was tested; it could become the longest in the world. The train, consisting of 696 cars, traveled 860 kilometers from Saldanha Bay on the country’s west coast to an iron ore mine deep in the interior, according to Africanews.
According to the state-owned transportation company Transnet Freight Rail, all the railcars were empty. To ensure the train—which stretched for many kilometers—could move, electric and diesel locomotives were positioned at different ends of the train.
Freight trains are usually much shorter, ranging in length from 800 meters to 2.4 kilometers.
Transnet stated that the test allowed them to break the previous world record, set in Australia in 2001. At that time, a train approximately 7.2 kilometers long ran between an iron ore mine and a port in Western Australia.
“South Africa may have set a new world record,” reports Africanews.
Final recognition of the achievement depends on verification of the record. If the reported results are confirmed, the South African train will become the longest freight train in history.
