Ukraine Has Begun Intercepting Ballistic Missiles Without The Patriot System

The Ukrainian military has found a way to counter Russian ballistic missiles.

Ukraine has learned to intercept Russian ballistic missiles using electronic warfare systems, without relying on American Patriot systems.

This is stated in a recent analytical article The Wall Street Journal.

According to the American publication, the Ukrainian and Russian militaries are actively developing electronic warfare technologies. They are attempting to disable UAVs, guided missiles, and ballistic missiles using radio frequencies.

One of the Ukrainian units, “Night Watch,” uses the domestically produced Lima system, developed by Cascade Systems. Military officials claim that the system can jam navigation signals at distances of up to 200 km, causing missiles to veer off course.

According to Ukrainian experts, Lima has been used, among other things, against “Kinzhal” hypersonic missiles and other ballistic targets. For detected Russian drones, the system’s effectiveness is reportedly between 70% and 95%, although its operation sometimes interferes with Ukrainian drones as well.

At the same time, Russia is improving its own defenses against electronic warfare. Russian missiles and drones are increasingly being equipped with Chinese CRPA antennas with steerable radiation patterns, which allow them to counter radio jamming. This forces Ukrainian developers to constantly update the Lima algorithms.
At the same time, electronic warfare cannot yet fully replace traditional air defense systems, primarily the Patriot. However, such systems are significantly cheaper to manufacture and operate, and have enormous potential.
