The Cat Was Abandoned Right On The Border Between Belarus And Poland

A female bus passenger came to the rescue.

At the “Warsaw Bridge” border crossing between Belarus and Poland, an unknown person left a cat in a carrier. The animal was found in the border zone without any documents, so it could not be allowed to cross into Poland.

For about 40 minutes, bystanders tried to find someone who would agree to take the cat back to Belarus. In the end, one of the female bus passengers got off with her belongings, took the animal, and headed toward the Belarusian checkpoint. The story caused quite a stir on Threads, as noted by Most.

Photos of the cat in a carrier were posted by a user with the handle annnnn_bh. The photos show the animal near a fence, next to the roadway.

“Some very irresponsible person left a cat in a carrier. No documents,” the woman wrote.

According to her, none of the witnesses knew how the cat ended up at the border or from which side it had been brought. The animal was not allowed to cross into Poland, and the bus could not turn around to return to Belarus.

For about 40 minutes, the passengers tried to flag down a car heading toward Belarus. They hoped someone would agree to take the cat. Soon, a woman came forward who decided to help the animal. She got off the bus with her belongings, grabbed the carrier, and headed back toward the Belarusian border checkpoint.

“Some wonderful woman got off the bus with her things, picked up the cat, and rushed back. I don’t know how this story will end or if they’ll accept him here. But my heart is just breaking,” said the author of the post.

It’s unknown whether the woman managed to get through the Belarusian border checkpoint with him.

How to Legally Transport an Animal from Belarus to Poland

To transport cats and dogs from Belarus to Poland, you must prepare the necessary documents in advance and meet veterinary requirements.

First, the animal is microchipped. Then it receives a rabies vaccination. It is important that the pet already have a microchip at the time of vaccination. After the initial vaccination, you must wait at least 30 days before having a blood test for rabies antibodies. Starting September 16, 2024, this test is mandatory for animals being imported into the EU from Belarus and Russia.

After the blood sample is collected for testing, at least three months must pass before the animal can be brought into the EU. The test result must confirm a sufficient level of antibodies.

Before traveling, you must also obtain a standard veterinary certificate. For entry into the EU, it is valid for 10 days from the date of issuance.

Customs declaration is not always required. If an animal is taken out of Belarus with no plans to return, a declaration is usually not filed. However, if the owner intends to return with the pet, the declaration will help confirm that this is the same animal that was previously taken out of the country.
