Is Trump Trying To Get Melania A Nobel Prize?

The role of the First Lady of the United States in the truce at Oleshky has been exaggerated.

Ukrainian Military Intelligence (GUR) and the Russian GRU spent four months held talks regarding Oleshky. This is reported by Le Monde reports, citing a Ukrainian source.

Moscow long refused to open a humanitarian corridor, but finally agreed to do so this summer. After that, the military intelligence services of the two countries—which had already been in contact regarding the exchange of prisoners of war and the remains of the deceased—spent several months working out the details. The humanitarian operation itself was organized by the Russian and Ukrainian ombudsmen Yana Lantratova and Dmytro Lubinets.

Publicly, however, the process was presented as an achievement of U.S. First Lady Melania Trump. Both sides thanked her for her efforts and stated that she played an important role in achieving the ceasefire.

A foreign source in Ukraine, cited by Le Monde, urged caution regarding these statements. According to the source, Melania Trump did indeed express concern about the situation in Oleshky, as did the UN and the Pope. However, it cannot be ruled out that Kyiv and Moscow reached an agreement on their own, and the First Lady’s role was highlighted to please U.S. President Donald Trump.

“Realizing that he wouldn’t receive the Nobel Peace Prize himself, Trump seems to have decided to secure it for Melania,” the publication’s source remarked ironically.
