Since 1995, the Republican Party has held this office in Texas.
Democrat Gina Inohosa defeated Texas Governor Greg Abbott, a Republican who had served three terms in office, according to NBC, CBS and NPR.
Thus, for the first time since 1995, Democrats have taken control of the governor’s office in this traditionally Republican-leaning state from the Republicans.
“If Texas Governor Greg Abbott hadn’t turned into a RINO (‘Republican in Name Only’) during the last six months of his political career, he wouldn’t have lost,” — wrote Donald Trump on Truth Social.
Texas is one of the most consistently Republican states in the U.S., although historically it has not always been so. Democrats long dominated state politics, and in the 20th century, Texas gradually became a Republican stronghold. The last Democrat to serve as governor was Ann Richards (1991–1995). Since 1995, all Texas governors have been Republicans.
Axios has called the state a “Republican stronghold.”
