During Operation “Vivaldi,” fighters from the Ukrainian Armed Forces’ 3rd Separate Assault Brigade penetrated the rear of Russian forces, captured a mortar position, and opened fire on the occupiers using the occupiers’ own weapons. According to the assault troops with the call signs “Tank” and “Gul,” while advancing through a forest, they discovered two shelters and a 120-mm mortar. At first, the Russian soldiers did not recognize the Ukrainians and mistook them for their own troops.

During the operation, the fighters captured several Russian soldiers, including the commander of the mortar crew.

The assault troops then turned the captured mortar toward the Russian positions and opened fire. According to “Tank,” the first shot was a test round, and after the second, the command post confirmed a hit.
