Most of all—during the Ukrainian Armed Forces' offensive in the Kursk region.

At least 350 Russian conscripts have been killed in the war against Ukraine, according to “Mediazona”, citing its own calculations. The actual number of conscripts killed may be higher. The publication identified the names of nearly 700 servicemen who signed contracts with the Ministry of Defense while serving their mandatory military service. After that, they were no longer considered conscripts.

The largest single incident deaths of conscripts was the Ukrainian Armed Forces’ offensive in the Kursk region in August 2024. According to Mediazona’s estimates, at least 60 people were killed in the first month of fighting alone. Russian authorities authorized the use of conscripts for service in border areas, where they came under Ukrainian shelling.

It became known as early as the first weeks of the war that conscripts were participating in the conflict. In February 2022, there may have been more than 2,000 conscripts in Ukraine, according to “Vazhnye Istorii,” citing a Russian military source. Putin initially claimed that only professional soldiers were participating in combat operations. However, on March 9, the Ministry of Defense acknowledged the presence of conscripts in units engaged in combat. A ministry spokesperson later assured that virtually all of them had been withdrawn to Russia.

Alexey Tabalov , head of the human rights organization “Conscript School” , told “Verstka” about the rise in complaints regarding conscripts being forced to sign contracts. According to him, military officials began demanding that they sign contracts as early as the first days of service. “For example, one [conscript] will reach out to us, and it turns out that 40 other people signed along with him,” Tabalov said.
