The G7 leaders also agreed to provide Ukraine with air defense equipment.
The leaders of the G7 countries, who met today in France, agreed to “step up pressure” on Moscow through energy sanctions, according to the French news agency AFP citing a diplomatic source.
Agreement on this issue was reached in the French city of Évian-les-Bains on the sidelines of the G7 summit, where a one-and-a-half-hour working meeting took place today between the leaders of the “Group of Seven” and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy titled “Ensuring Peace and Security for Ukraine and Europe.”
“The leaders agreed to increase pressure on Russia, in particular through sanctions targeting oil and gas,” AFP quoted its source in diplomatic circles as saying.
According to the agency, the leaders also agreed to “maintain the current momentum [in Ukraine’s favor on the battlefield] by providing Ukraine with air defense systems, means for better protection, and tools to consolidate gains [on the front lines].”
The three-day G7 summit is taking place June 15–17 in the French town of Evian-les-Bains on the shores of Lake Geneva. It brought together the leaders of the world’s seven most influential nations—the United Kingdom, Canada, Germany, Italy, France, Japan, and the United States—as well as the European Union.
On the second day of the summit, June 16, a meeting dedicated to Ukraine took place, with the participation of Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy. Prior to that, a brief bilateral meeting was held between Zelenskyy and the host of the summit, French President Emmanuel Macron, and a trilateral behind-the-scenes meeting—with Macron and U.S. President Donald Trump.
Trump called it “very good” and stated that Russia must sign an agreement. Zelenskyy, for his part, stated that he had spoken with Trump about the possibility of obtaining a license to manufacture anti-missile systems and missiles.
Russia’s war against Ukraine is one of the key topics of the summit. Earlier, international media had predicted that world leaders, together with Zelenskyy, would try to persuade Donald Trump to pressure Russia into negotiations based on the five conditions for a just peace, which had previously been agreed upon with Ukraine by the leaders of the United Kingdom, Germany, and France.
