About 100 flights have been delayed, and thousands of passengers have been spending days sleeping on the floor without food.
Sochi International Airport delayed a flight to Novosibirsk for three days, forcing passengers to spend the night on the floor of the waiting area. An airline representative assured passengers that the plane was about to take off; in the meantime, some flights were canceled, some were delayed, and others will still take off. What is happening in the Krasnodar Region, which faces the threat of drone attacks every night?
Passengers on Flight 6641 from Sochi to Novosibirsk complained to the media about poor conditions at Sochi Airport and the fact that they had to spend the night in the middle of the terminal, according to a report by the Russian media outlet “Ostrozhno, Novosti.” The plane was supposed to depart on June 15, but passengers are still waiting for their flight. Meanwhile, the airport is filled with hundreds of other passengers who are unable to depart. The media has described the situation as a “collapse at Sochi Airport.” “Focus” gathered information about the events in the Krasnodar Krai of the Russian Federation, located 800 km from Ukraine.
Russian media spoke with passengers on the flight, who said that the departure had been rescheduled four times starting on June 15. A day after the delay, the Russians were taken to a hotel, then checked out, and continued waiting at the airport. Their suitcases were already in the baggage hold, so all they had to rely on was their carry-on luggage. Photos from the scene show hundreds of Russians crowding the middle of the tarmac and trying to sleep on the floor, having laid out sleeping mats. It also emerged that the airline had issued meal vouchers for two days, but the restaurants had run out of food.

An unnamed company representative spoke with media representatives and assured them that the plane was about to be taxied to the runway and that passengers would be able to fly to Novosibirsk. It is noted, however, that about 100 flights are delayed at the airport, and some flights have been canceled. Russian media have not reported the cause of the disruption in Sochi.

The Airport-online monitoring portal provides an update on the current situation at Sochi Airport. It shows that flights to Moscow (as many as four) and Dushanbe have been canceled, while flights to Moscow, Chelyabinsk, and St. Petersburg have been delayed. The remaining flights are on schedule and expected to depart.

Meanwhile, the local “Sochi Online” group reported overnight that a drone attack had occurred and that the airport had been closed for six hours. Air defense systems were active over the city overnight: Russians heard the rumble of explosions. After the nighttime alert, which ended around midnight, a new wave of attacks began, lasting from 7 a.m. to 9 a.m. on June 17.
The governor of Krasnodar Krai Veniamin Kondratyev ignored the drone attack: the official has remained silent about the strikes from June 15 to 17. The latest report on this topic is from the 13th, which mentions a strike on an oil terminal in the Temryuk District. It turned out that one Russian was killed and three were injured, and a fire caused by “falling debris” was extinguished by 96 firefighters.
On the morning of June 17, the Russian Ministry of Defense reported an attack by 201 Ukrainian UAVs, and the list of regions targeted included the Krasnodar Krai (along with Sochi). Data is also available for previous periods: from June 13 to 16, Russians were attacked by 200–400 drones daily.
