A Flight From Sochi To Arkhangelsk Sent A Distress Signal Over The Black Sea And Disappeared From Radar

The cause of the incident has been determined.

On Wednesday evening, June 17, a Russian passenger plane operated by Smartavia sent out a distress signal and then disappeared from radar. However, it soon reappeared and made an emergency landing.

This was reported by RBC-Ukraine citing Russian media.

According to media reports, the Boeing 737-800, operating the “Sochi–Arkhangelsk” flight, took off from Sochi and then, while flying over the Black Sea, transmitted the code 7700. This code indicates an emergency or critical situation on board.

After the incident, the plane disappeared from radar and did not reappear. However, it soon reappeared briefly, and as the media reported, it was likely burning off fuel before landing at Sochi Airport.

Around 11:30 p.m., it was reported that the plane had safely made an emergency landing. Preliminary reports indicate that the distress signal was caused by the failure of one of the engines.

Later, Russian media reported that there were no casualties during the emergency landing.
