The U.S. And Iran Have Signed A Memorandum Of Understanding For The Second Time

The agreement has already entered into force.

The United States and Iran have once again signed a memorandum of understanding to end the war and reopen the Strait of Hormuz. The agreement has already entered into force.

This was reported by Axios.

According to media reports, the signing ceremony was scheduled to take place in Switzerland on Friday, but sources say that the possibility of signing and implementing the deal earlier was discussed. The reason is that both sides have reached an agreement on the prompt opening of the strait.

Another factor may have been political pressure on the White House to publish the text of the memorandum of understanding. One source claimed that it was Iran that demanded the text not be published until the official signing, but denied allegations that the White House had succumbed to political pressure.

How the Signing Took Place

A senior administration official told reporters that the initial agreement was signed electronically on Sunday. Specifically, by U.S. President Donald Trump and U.S. Vice President J.D. Vance. On the Iranian side, the document was signed by Parliament Speaker Mohammad-Bagher Ghalibaf.

Media reports also state that Trump signed the document on Wednesday during a dinner in France with President Emmanuel Macron. Sources at Axios say this was already the “second signing.” But it is unclear why two signings were necessary.

News Nation reporter Kelly Meyer also writes that officials have not yet answered the question of what the difference is between the digital signature obtained on Wednesday evening and the one obtained on Sunday.

Nevertheless, according to Axios sources, the meeting between the U.S. and Iranian delegations, led by Vance and Galibaf, will take place on Friday as planned. They plan to discuss the start of negotiations on Iran’s nuclear program.

Meanwhile, CNN reports that, according to their source, Trump signed a paper copy on Wednesday. The official ceremony, with Vance in attendance, will take place on Friday as planned.

What They’re Saying in Iran

The Clash Report published a statement from Iranian Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Esmail Baghai. According to him, the text of the memorandum was signed in both Persian and English.

“If only the English text existed, its translation could have led to disputes over interpretation. But now both sides have signed not only the English text but also the Persian text,” he said.

Updated

The spokesperson for the Iranian Foreign Ministry confirmed that the memorandum was officially finalized after both countries signed it electronically.

“The Iran-U.S. memorandum has been officially finalized, as both sides have signed it,” Baghai said.

He added that although a meeting of the negotiating teams is planned in Geneva, there will be no signing ceremony in Switzerland.

Thus, information regarding whether the signing will take place on Friday remains contradictory.

As a reminder, yesterday the U.S. released the official text of the memorandum of understanding with Iran.
