The right-wing politician was supported by Donald Trump.

Right-wing candidate Abelardo de la Esprielya won the presidential election in Colombia by a narrow margin, according to preliminary election results.

With nearly 100% of the ballots counted following the second round of the election, de la Esprielya received 49.66% of the vote, while his opponent, left-wing ‌Senator Iván Cepeda trailed by only about 250,000 votes with 48.70%, according to ‌data from the National Electoral Commission.

De la Esprieya, who had the support of U.S. President Donald ‌Trump, blamed outgoing President Gustavo Petro for Colombia’s economic hardships and security issues.

He promised to ‌end negotiations with criminal groups, as well as to promote the development of the oil and gas sector, lower taxes, and reduce the size of the government by up to 40%.

At the same time, the politician said he would maintain the 23% increase in the minimum wage introduced under Petro, as well as other popular social measures.
