The Novomoskovsk Power Plant is also on fire.
On the night of June 26, Russia’s Tula Region came under a massive drone attack. Local residents claimed that the Azot plant in Novomoskovsk was the target of the attack, and they also complained of the smell of ammonia in the air, according to OBOZ.UA.

In addition, Russians reported power outages, and NASA satellites detected a fire on the grounds of the Novomoskovsk power plant. The Exilenova+ Telegram channel and the independent Russian publication ASTRA reported on the attack and its consequences.

What is known about the attack
Exilenova+ reported that unidentified drones flew over the Tula region for several hours. They were targeting a major chemical plant in Novomoskovsk.

“Today, the Tula region came under a very massive attack. According to local residents, the target of the attack was the Azot plant in Novomoskovsk. Explosions and the sound of drones flying overhead were heard in the city for several hours. Local residents report a strange smell of ammonia in the air and power outages. These may also be the consequences of the strike forces’ actions,” the channel writes.

Shortly thereafter, Exilenova+ noted that following the nighttime attack, the NASA FIRMS service had detected a fire on the grounds of the Novomoskovskaya GRES power plant.
ASTRA also reported on the strikes against the Azot plant.
“On the night of June 26, a large number of explosions were heard in the city. It is claimed that the Azot plant was attacked. Nothing is known about the consequences. The plant had previously caught fire as a result of a Ukrainian attack on the night of June 14,” Russian journalists noted.

After analyzing eyewitness footage online, the publication concluded that the smoke visible above Novomoskovsk is likely rising from the direction of the plant. Specifically, one of the photos was taken approximately 8 km from the plant.

The governor of the Tula Region Dmitry Milyaev reported a “massive attack by Ukrainian UAVs,” which resulted in “damage to power lines and an industrial facility in Novomoskovsk.”
“Emergency services are on the scene,” the Russian official added.

The Azot plant in Novomoskovsk, part of the EuroChem holding company, is Russia’s largest producer of ammonia and nitrogen fertilizers. The plant produces ammonia, nitric acid, methanol, and mineral fertilizers, as well as chemical raw materials used in the production of explosives and ammunition.
As reported by Reuters, two EuroChem plants (the Nevinnomyssk Nitrogen Plant and the Novomoskovsk "Azot") shipped at least 38,000 metric tons of acetic acid and nearly 5,000 metric tons of nitric acid to the Sverdlov Plant in Dzerzhinsk, Nizhny Novgorod Oblast, between 2022 and 2024. As the publication noted, these chemicals are used to produce octogen and hexogen, which are necessary for the manufacture of artillery shells.
