This announcement is intensifying the conflict between Congress and the White House.
U.S. President Donald Trump has officially notified Congress of the resumption of hostilities in Iran, according to The New York Times reports, citing a letter sent by the U.S. leader to members of Congress.
In the letter sent to congressional leaders, Trump wrote that on July 7, U.S. forces carried out “defensive strikes against targets inside Iran,” marking the first official confirmation of the resumption of U.S. attacks on the Islamic Republic after a long hiatus.
This announcement intensifies the struggle between Congress and the White House over the president’s authority to continue the war in Iran without Capitol Hill’s approval, the publication notes. Both chambers have already voted to require the president to end the war or seek authorization to continue it, but the White House continues to assert that Trump is acting within his constitutional authority, the NYT reports.
The U.S. Constitution states that only Congress can declare war.
