The Hungarian National Assembly adopted the 17th amendment to the constitution, which, among other things, calls for the resignation of the country’s president, Tamás Szujók. The head of state now has five days to resign or refer the matter to the Constitutional Court.
The vote was broadcast on the parliament’s YouTube channel. 139 members voted in favor of the amendment, and six voted against it. The Fidesz party of former Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán did not participate in the vote.
The Hungarian government submitted the draft amendments to parliament on July 4. It provides for the election of a new president by parliament within 30 days of the amendments taking effect. In addition, the terms of office for members of parliament are limited to three four-year terms, and an age limit of 70 is established for members of the Constitutional Court.
Prime Minister Péter Magyar, after taking office in May, repeatedly called on Tamás Szujók to resign. Magyar accused the president of ignoring abuses by Viktor Orbán’s government. Tamás Szujók refused to step down, after which the prime minister threatened to remove him from office by force.
