Putin's failure in Ukraine will accelerate Russia's collapse.
British-Polish historian Norman Davis believes that the full-scale war against Ukraine has been a strategic failure for Russian leader Vladimir Putin and could accelerate the disintegration of the Russian Federation. He expressed this view on the program “On the Record” on TVP World, as noted by the Kyiv Post.
According to the historian, the Kremlin’s attempt to restore the Russian or Soviet empire in a new form has suffered a serious setback.
“Putin’s attempts to restore the Soviet or, at the very least, the Russian empire in a new form have suffered a major failure,” Davis stated.
He noted that during his more than two decades in power, Putin has been able to restore only isolated elements of the former Soviet sphere of influence, while the war has demonstrated the limited capabilities of the Russian military.
“This is a demonstration of Russia’s weakness,” the historian emphasized, comparing the modern Russian Armed Forces to the Soviet Red Army at the end of World War II.
Davis also stated that Russia is increasingly dependent on China:
“Russia is now a vassal of China.”
In his view, it is the Far East that could become the region where a new phase of the Russian state’s disintegration begins. The historian pointed out that China already dominates trade there and is actively exploiting the region’s natural resources.
Separately, Davis suggested that, over time, China might reclaim Vladivostok, which passed from the Qing Empire to the Russian Empire in the 19th century.
