The Aurigids are a meteor shower of moderate intensity. Their radiant is located in the constellation Auriga, near the star Capella. The parent body of this meteor shower is Comet S/1911 N1 Kiess.

This year, the Aurigids are active from August 28 through September 5 and reach their peak on the night of August 31 through September 1. On the night of the peak, according to forecasts, they could produce up to 6 meteors per hour under a perfectly dark sky. However, the bright Moon during the peak will significantly reduce the number of “shooting stars” that will be visible.

The first meteor shower of fall is characterized by a low number of meteors, but it periodically exhibits bursts. It was thanks to one such burst, which occurred in 1935, that scientists were able to discover this meteor shower. Unexpected short bursts were also observed in 1986, 1994, and 2019. The maximum number of “shooting stars” reached 30–50 per hour during those events.
