Negotiations Between The Government And The Opposition Have Begun In Venezuela

The dialogue is taking place with U.S. support.

Talks have begun in Caracas between Venezuela’s interim government and opposition representatives, aimed at facilitating a political transition and restoring democratic institutions in the country.

According to CNN, the talks began a week after the originally scheduled date of August 1. The dialogue is taking place with U.S. support.

The government delegation is led by Jorge Rodríguez, president of Venezuela’s National Assembly and brother of acting President Delcy Rodríguez.

The opposition bloc is represented by former National Assembly deputy Dinora Figuera. The delegation includes former members of the 2015 National Assembly, which was previously recognized as legitimate by the U.S.

However, opposition leaders María Karina Machado and former presidential candidate Edmundo González Urrutia are not participating in the talks. Both politicians are currently outside the country and have stated that they will monitor the progress of the dialogue and hope it will lead to elections.

The parties are expected to discuss strengthening democracy, guarantees of political rights, and issues related to the country’s recovery following the devastating earthquakes in June.
