CNN: Ukraine Has Opened A New Front In The War With Russia In Africa

The Ukrainian military is playing an increasingly active role in operations against Russian units on the mainland.

Ukraine is expanding its military cooperation beyond its borders. Moreover, Kyiv is opening a new front in the war with Russia—primarily on the African continent.

According to CNN, about 15 Ukrainian specialists are currently working in Mali, where they are assisting local forces fighting against Russian units.

Ukrainian drone operators are training fighters and conducting part of their work remotely, receiving signals from UAVs via the Internet and transmitting commands via radio. Ukrainian specialists have also worked in Sudan, and military personnel from Chad, Niger, and Burkina Faso have traveled to Mali for training. In addition, Ukrainian instructors have trained local forces in at least five Middle Eastern countries to counter Iranian “Shahed” drones.

In return, according to CNN, Kyiv is securing agreements on security cooperation and the supply of ammunition. In Mali, Ukrainian military personnel have had to adapt their tactics to local conditions: daytime temperatures can exceed 43 degrees, and sand and dust quickly render their equipment inoperable. The Ukrainians are sharing their experience with drone operations with local fighters, while they themselves are learning combat skills for the desert.

CNN also reports on the Ukrainian military’s participation in operations around Kidal, where Russia had previously accused Kyiv of aiding Tuareg rebels. Ukrainian maritime UAV operators are also working in Libya. From their base in Misrata, they are conducting operations against the Russian “shadow fleet”, which transports oil in circumvention of sanctions.

At the same time, the Russian Federation is also strengthening its position in Africa and using the region to expand its military and political influence. Following the collapse of “Wagner,” Moscow created the African Corps, which supports governments loyal to the Kremlin.
