The Canadian Prime Minister Announced A “unique Alliance” With The European Union

The EU and Canada intend to form a strategic alliance in the areas of trade, defense, and technology.

Canada intends to form a “unique alliance” with the European Union. This was announced by the country’s prime minister Mark Carney, according to CBC.

“What we are striving for and will begin discussing is a unique alliance with the European Union. We share the same values, have the same priorities, and possess complementary strengths,” Carney said.

Earlier, Bloomberg reported that the European Union and Canada plan to announce on September 16 the creation of a strategic alliance in the areas of trade, defense, and technology. According to the agency, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen will present the plan for the new partnership in Strasbourg.

It was noted that the parties want to build as close a relationship as possible, but there is no talk of full EU membership for Canada. The escalation was triggered by Washington’s August decision to impose 50 percent tariffs on Canadian goods worth a total of $27.6 billion.
