Lukashenko Promised The Vatican That Belarus—which Is Expelling Priests—would Support It

Amid a crackdown on Catholic priests, the dictator wished Leo XIV a happy birthday.

Alexander Lukashenko congratulated Pope Leo XIV on his birthday on September 14 and stated that the Vatican “can always count on” Belarus’s support for initiatives aimed at achieving peace, according to the usurper’s press service.

In his message, Lukashenko described Leo XIV’s ministry as a mission that “strengthens faith in the power of dialogue” and is of particular importance in a world “that craves stability and security.”

“The Holy See can always count on Belarus’s support for initiatives aimed at ensuring a just and sustainable peace in the region,” the dictator stated.

He also expressed confidence that relations between Minsk and the Vatican “must continue to develop in order to preserve the Christian heritage and humanitarian principles.”

It should be recalled that in recent months, Belarusian authorities have denied some foreign Catholic priests permission to work in the country. In August, it became known that Roman Schulz , a Polish monk from the Dominican Order who had been serving in Belarus since 2007, was required to leave the country. His continued religious activities were not approved.

According to “Khrystianskaya Viziya,” a similar problem has arisen for at least ten other Polish priests in the Minsk-Mogilev Archdiocese. The Metropolitan of Minsk-Mogilev Józef Stanewski appealed to Lukashenko to allow them to continue their ministry in Belarus.
