Elena Lazarchik, An Activist With “European Belarus,” Has Been Released

The regime sentenced her to 9.5 years in prison.

In Belarus, on September 16, another 25 political prisoners were released.

Among those released on September 16 was Elena Lazarchik, an activist with the “European Belarus” civic campaign.

Elena Lazarchik is 51 years old; she is the widow of Sergei Matskoitya, an activist and defender of Kuropat (he died in 2023).

In September 2022, Elena was sentenced to 8 years in a penal colony; she was charged with insulting Lukashenko (Article 368 of the Criminal Code), forming or participating in an “extremist group” (Article 361-1 of the Criminal Code), inciting hostility (Article 130 of the Criminal Code), and grossly violating public order (Article 342 of the Criminal Code).

Later, another year and a half of prison time was added to her sentence under the article on disobeying prison authorities (Article 411 of the Criminal Code).

Earlier, U.S. Special Envoy John Cole reported following negotiations in Minsk that 25 people would be released in Belarus, and the United States would, in response, lift sanctions against two Belarusian companies.
