The SBU Placed Russian General Varpakhovich On Its "blacklist" Three Days Ago

More details are emerging about the high-profile assassination attempt on Russian Major General Nikolai Varpakhovich, who was shot twice this morning by a hitman at his home near Saratov, according to “Dialog.UA”.

Just three days ago, the Security Service of Ukraine formally charged Varpakhovich in absentia, and today a hitman stormed into his home. The assailant rode up to the military officer’s house on a motorcycle and opened fire. One bullet, according to the channel, struck him in the face; another hit his torso. Varpakhovich survived but remains in critical condition.

The key detail of the story is its timeline. On August 31, the SBU and the Office of the Prosecutor General of Ukraine reported that they had gathered evidence against two Russian military officers implicated in missile strikes on Reuters journalists in the Donetsk region and on the “Okhmatdet” Children’s Hospital in Kyiv.

According to the SBU, Varpakhovich was one of the suspects. The Ukrainian security service stated that Varpakhovich commands the 22nd Heavy Bomber Aviation Division of the Russian Armed Forces.

According to the investigation, on July 8, 2024, he issued a combat order for a missile strike on the “Okhmatdet” National Specialized Children’s Hospital in Kyiv.

At that time, according to the SBU, long-range aviation units under Varpakhovich’s command carried out a precision strike on the medical facility using an “X-101” air-to-ground cruise missile, launched from a Russian Tu-95MS missile-carrying bomber.

In fact, only three days passed between the SBU’s suspicion and the report of the shooting. Telegram channels are presenting this as a symbolic chain of events: first, suspicion of an attack on a children’s hospital, then several rounds fired deep inside Russian territory.

It should be noted that Varpakhovich is no ordinary officer. His division is linked to the Russian long-range aviation, which operates Tu-160s, Tu-95MSs, and Tu-22M3s. These are precisely the aircraft Russia uses for missile strikes against Ukraine, including attacks on cities, energy facilities, and civilian infrastructure.
