The Kremlin feared that Trump's envoys would learn the truth about history.
U.S. President’s Special Envoys Steve Whitcroft and Jared Kushner were given a brief tour of St. Sophia Cathedral in Kyiv. At the same time, the Russian side opposed similar events for Donald Trump’s special representatives.
This was reported by BBC Ukraine citing informed sources.
The article notes that a brief tour of the cathedral was arranged for Whitcoff and Kushner, although “the Russians were opposed to such historical tours being conducted in Kyiv for American special envoys.”
However, judging by a video released by the Office of the President, the U.S. president’s special envoys enjoyed this format, the publication notes.
One of BBC Ukraine’s informed sources also pointed out the similarity in “personality type” between Kushner and Zelenskyy.
“In terms of their personalities, Kushner and Zelenskyy are similar. Kushner is always surrounded by piles of papers, maps, and plans; he’s pragmatic. Whitcoff, on the other hand, is more like David Arakhamia, since his approach is along the lines of: ‘Let’s sit down at a restaurant, have dinner, and talk,’”—the publication quotes its source as saying.
The Ukrainian and American delegations spent the next few hours at the negotiating table. The talks took place in several stages.
On September 5, Whitcoff and Kushner visited Moscow and held talks with Russian dictator Vladimir Putin.
On September 6, U.S. President Donald Trump’s special envoys arrived in Ukraine for the first time to participate in negotiations aimed at ending the war.
During his visit to Kyiv, Jared Kushner stated that President Trump seeks not only to end Russia’s war against Ukraine but also to achieve long-term peace.
According to the Kyiv Independent, Trump may hold a phone call with Putin after he is briefed on the results of the special envoys’ talks in Moscow and Kyiv.
