The response to Russia’s latest (massive attack on Kyiv https://charter97.org/ru/news/2026/9/8/697652/) should be to strengthen Ukraine’s air defense and its ability to launch retaliatory strikes.
On Tuesday, September 8, stated Valeriy Zaluzhny, Ukraine’s ambassador to the United Kingdom and former commander-in-chief of the Armed Forces of Ukraine , while commenting on the nighttime attack.
“There is nothing here about peace—only terror and blackmail against the civilian population on the eve of winter. This is precisely the message Russia is sending with its shelling immediately following attempts at peace talks.”
“The only response to this can be to strengthen Ukraine’s air defense, our infrastructure, and our capabilities to launch retaliatory strikes,” Zaluzhny noted.
The former Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of Ukraine called on international partners to focus on this. After all, Zaluzhny emphasized, support for Ukraine is also support for European security in a broader sense.
“The enemy will not stop on its own,” Valery Zaluzhny stressed.
On the night of Tuesday, September 8, Russian forces attacked Kyiv with ballistic and cruise missiles, and in the morning continued the attack using drones. Debris and fires have been reported at 16 locations in the Solomianskyi, Darnytskyi, Holosiivskyi, Shevchenkivskyi, and Podilskyi districts.
At least two people were killed, and another 16 were injured.
