Syarhei Kavalneka being force-fed

The wife of the activist has learned this from the detention facility in Vitsebsk.

Alena Kavalenka wanted to pass juice to her husband in case he decides to stop his hunger strike lasting for the 30th day. She was not allowed to pass the juice. A representative of the medical unit told her Kavalenka was being force-fed, Radio Svaboda reports.

“I asked why they feed him and how it looks. I was explained he receives meat broth through a tube. I said I read on the Internet that only light food like diluted juices are acceptable after a long hunger strike. The officer of the medical unit replied Syarhei receives food in accordance with instructions in his “surgery book”. He advised me to read that book,” Alena Kavalenka said.

She asked how the process looked: if Syarhei is being fed by force, handcuffed to his bed. But she was not told any details.

Alena Kavalenka has been denied for the third time to have a meeting with her husband. Activist’s mother, Lidzia Kavalenka, was also denied to see her son. Investigator Syarhei Volkau wrote in his answer he thinks a meeting between the activist and his family was not necessary.

Syarhei Kavalenka was thrown into a detention facility in Vitsebsk on December 22, 2011. A criminal case over violating the rules of serving suspended sentence was opened against him. Kavalenka, an activist of the CCP BPF party, was convicted for hanging out a white-red-white flag on city’s Christmas Tree in Vitsebsk on January 1, 2010.
