UCP proposes to cancel sham elections to pseudo-parliament

UCP leader Anatol Lyabedzka said in a press conference on August 10 the United Civil Party proposed the authorities to cancel parliamentary elections in Belarus.

According to him, the appropriate political statement is ready and will be sent to all governmental bodies, including the Lukashenka Administration, the government and the “house of representatives” on Monday, August 13, BelaPAN news agency reports.

“After the stage of formation of election commissions was completed, we need to call things by their proper names. We have the sham elections to the pseudo-parliament. A question arises: Why do we need such institutions that are not elected but appointed, that use a large among of money of tax-payers, that bear no responsibility, that have initiated only one draft law for the last four years?” Lyabedzka says.

“Amid the ongoing decline in legislation and legal practice in Belarus, it may be a good decision to abandon the sham elections to the pseudo-parliament,” Lyabedzka said.

He thinks members of “parliament” can be appointed without elections that will save a significant sum of money from the national budget.
