This is the necessary price to pay for containing Russian aggression.
Germany will continue to provide financial support to Ukraine until a peace agreement acceptable to Kyiv is reached. German Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul emphasized that this assistance is in the country’s national interest, according to Bild.
According to the minister, the Christian Democratic Union (CDU) needs to explain to citizens “more regularly and more actively” why support for Ukraine is important. He acknowledged that the party has become more cautious in its public arguments in favor of aid to Kyiv.
Wadeful noted that increasing spending on Europe’s defense and security means cutting funding for other areas. However, in his view, this is a necessary price to pay for deterring Russian aggression.
The German foreign minister also expressed confidence that Russia’s economic difficulties will intensify over time. As a historical example, he cited the collapse of the Soviet Union.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has requested at least 70 billion euros in additional aid from the European Union. The EU is only able to provide about 40 billion euros in the form of a new loan.
