I need to work out.

Recent photos of Leonardo DiCaprio on the beach have reignited the debate about the so-called "dad belly" and raised the question of whether a small amount of excess fat around the waist could pose a hidden health risk, writes Fox News.

“Dad bod” is a popular term typically used to describe a certain body type in middle-aged men, characterized by a soft belly, a lack of “six-pack” abs, and moderate physical fitness.

Meanwhile, doctors at the Cleveland Clinic (U.S.) note that a person’s health cannot be reliably determined by their appearance. There are two types of abdominal fat: subcutaneous fat, which is located directly under the skin, and visceral fat, which accumulates around the internal organs. It is excess visceral fat that is associated with an increased risk of cardiovascular disease, type 2 diabetes, and other health problems.

In an interview with Fox News, New York-based personal trainer Marfred Suazo discussed how to reduce body fat and thereby lower the associated risks. He defines a “beer belly” as a loss of muscle tone, an increase in waist circumference, and a decrease in muscle mass. It should be noted that Suazo has not worked with Leonardo DiCaprio; his recommendations pertain to general principles of fat loss, not the actor’s specific health condition.

According to the trainer, an increase in waist size and fat accumulation may be linked to changes in daily habits: an unbalanced diet and a decrease in physical activity.

“Perhaps you’ve become less disciplined with your diet, moved less, and taken fewer steps per day. As a rule, you consume more food and drinks than you burn through physical activity. As a result, your body begins to reflect this,” explained Suazo.

How to Reduce Belly Fat

According to Suazo, you should start with your diet. It’s important to monitor your total calorie intake and maintain a balance of proteins, carbohydrates, and fats.

The trainer also recommends incorporating full-body strength training into your routine two to three times a week. Among the exercises he advises focusing on are squats, straight-leg deadlifts (lifting a barbell off the floor with your legs nearly straight), back rows, push-ups, and bench presses. These exercises help build strength and maintain muscle mass.

In addition, he notes that cardio workouts are just as important. According to recommendations from U.S. health authorities, adults should devote at least 150 minutes per week to moderate-intensity aerobic exercise or 75 minutes to high-intensity aerobic exercise.

At the same time, the trainer emphasized that abdominal exercises alone are not enough to get rid of belly fat. They strengthen the muscles but do not allow you to burn fat exclusively in that area. Therefore, achieving results requires a comprehensive approach that includes a balanced diet, strength training, and cardio exercises, which help reduce overall body fat percentage.

Suazo noted that the first changes from adjusting your diet may become noticeable within a few weeks. However, results depend on your diet, level of physical activity, and initial body composition.
