An unusual road marking will提示 drivers when they should slow down.

Road markings have appeared on a road in the Brest Region that are unlike anything else currently seen in Belarus.

They can change color depending on the temperature, BelTA reports, citing RUE “Brestavtodor.”

A section of the R-16 highway near the village of Tyukhinichi in the Brest District was selected for the experiment. The technology was approved by the regional traffic police.

How the unusual road marking works

A large snowflake was painted on the asphalt before the bridge ramp, with the innovative paint applied to its center.

It is this paint that reacts to changes in the weather. When the temperature stays above +4°C, the snowflake remains white.

But as soon as the temperature drops below that mark, the center of the snowflake turns pink.

Why is this needed?

This visual signal is intended to warn drivers of possible icy conditions.

The fact is that the concrete structures of bridges cool down faster than regular road surfaces. Therefore, they can become slippery sooner than adjacent sections of the highway.

When they see a pink snowflake, drivers should slow down and be especially careful.

A special sign will soon be installed before the bridge to explain the purpose of this unusual road marking to drivers.

Will the snowflake appear on other roads?

For now, this is only an experiment. Throughout the winter, experts will monitor how the markings react to temperature changes and how accurately they function.

If the tests prove successful, such warning markings may eventually appear on other roads, near bridges, and overpasses.

However, there is an important caveat. The innovative paint used for the road markings near Brest does not yet meet current standards. It will require certification for widespread use.
