Another Country May Revoke The Visa-free Regime For Belarusians In Order To Join The EU

The head of government has not yet specified any specific dates.

Moldova may introduce visas for citizens of Belarus and Russia—this is linked to the country’s intention to join the EU, for which it must gradually bring its visa policy into line with European rules. This was stated by Moldovan Prime Minister Vasile Tofan, as reported by TV8.

The Moldovan prime minister did not specify a timeline for introducing visas for Belarusians and Russians.

“We want to continue on the European path. I’m not ready to give a date. If EU regulations require it, I believe we must make decisions that will allow us to move forward in the process of European integration,” Tofan said.

According to a European Commission report, Moldova still needs to align its visa regime with EU rules regarding 11 countries. In addition to Belarus and Russia, the list includes Armenia, Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Qatar, Tajikistan, Turkey, Uzbekistan, and Vanuatu. Currently, citizens of all these countries can enter Moldova without visas.

Other countries that are candidates for EU membership are already introducing similar restrictions. For example, as of November 1, Montenegro has imposed a visa requirement for Belarusians and Russians, while Albania revoked visa-free travel for Belarusian citizens as early as September 30, 2025.

As a reminder, Moldova was granted EU candidate status in June 2022, and on June 25, 2024, it officially began accession negotiations with the EU.
