To avoid becoming a "lame duck."

U.S. President Donald Trump has suggested in conversations with White House staff that he might seek a third term out of fear of becoming a "lame duck" and losing his political influence, according to Reuters a former high-ranking official in the U.S. leader’s administration. In the U.S., a “lame duck” refers to an elected official whose influence wanes significantly before the official end of their term: the politician remains in office but loses support and faces difficulties in pushing through decisions.

In February, in an interview with NBC News, Trump dodged a direct answer to the question of whether he had plans to remain U.S. president after the expiration of his second term. “That would be interesting. But it would be terrible if I gave you the answer you’re looking for—life would become much less exciting, life would become far less interesting,” said the White House chief. Trump’s second term expires on January 20, 2029. According to the 22nd Amendment to the U.S. Constitution, no person may be elected president more than twice. To repeal this restriction, approval by two-thirds of the members of both houses of Congress and ratification by at least 38 states is required, or a Constitutional Convention must be convened at the initiative of two-thirds of the states.

The question of Trump’s political influence has become a hot topic amid the upcoming midterm congressional elections in November, Reuters notes. According to one of the president’s current advisers, the White House is trying to demonstrate to Republican lawmakers that Trump is still capable of influencing their political future. However, the source acknowledged that a gradual weakening of the president’s influence is inevitable after the midterm elections.

The White House, for its part, rejects suggestions that the president’s position is weakening. Administration spokesperson Olivia Wales stated that Trump “is the undisputed leader of the Republican Party and is committed to maintaining the Republican majority in Congress.” One way for Trump to maintain political clout after his presidential term ends could be to participate in the selection of the Republican Party’s candidate for the 2028 election, Reuters notes.

Douglas Brinkley, a historian at Rice University who specializes in presidential biographies, warned that the world should expect new unexpected moves from Trump in the final years of his presidency. “His chaotic leadership style isn’t going anywhere, regardless of whether Democrats gain control of Congress or not,” Brinkley emphasized.
