The ships were heading for Ukrainian ports.
Oleksiy Kuleba, Ukraine’s Minister of Community and Territorial Development, reported a terrorist attack by the Russian Armed Forces on civilian vessels. A ship from Turkey sustained serious damage.
Kuleba reported that on the night of June 22, two civilian merchant ships heading for Ukrainian ports were struck as a result of an attack by Russian drones.
A crew member—a 58-year-old cook and Egyptian citizen—died. Eight sailors, including citizens of Turkey and India, were forced to evacuate to a life raft. The vessel sustained significant damage and was no longer seaworthy.
In addition, the Russians attacked ships flying the flags of Palau and Belize: “Fortunately, there were no casualties, and the damaged ships continued on their way.”
“This is yet another war crime committed by Russia. Attacks on the merchant fleet and humanitarian maritime routes pose a direct threat to global food and economic security and require a decisive response from the international community,” the minister noted.
The Ukrainian Navy reported that it had provided assistance to the crew of the Turkish dry cargo ship VICTRESS, flying the Panamanian flag, which had been rammed by the Russians.
There were nine crew members on board—citizens of Egypt, Turkey, and India.

“This incident once again demonstrates that the Russian Federation continues to violate the norms of international maritime law and pose threats to civilian shipping. The Naval Forces of the Armed Forces of Ukraine will continue to do everything possible to ensure safety at sea,” the Ukrainian military concluded in its statement.
