Two Shots: New Details On The Assassination Attempt On A Russian General Near Engels

Russian Telegram channels and independent media outlets have reported new details the assassination attempt near Saratov on Major General Nikolai Varpakhovich—commander of the 22nd Heavy Bomber Aviation Division of the Russian Aerospace Forces. The details were compiled by “Dialog”.

According to the Ukrainian channel Supernova+, Varpakhovich was specifically targeted in the attack in the village of Probuzhdenie. As reported by Mash, the shooter rode up to the military officer’s house on a motorcycle and opened fire. One bullet struck the man in the face, and another in the torso. The victim was hospitalized and survived. The general’s driver was also wounded—according to Mash, he initially fled and hid, then returned to the scene and called an ambulance.

Ukrainian authorities had previously accused Varpakhovich of involvement in the strike on a residential building in Odesa, which resulted in the deaths of eight people. His details are also listed in the database of the Ukrainian website “Mirotvorets.”

Varpakhovich is originally from Ryazan. According to information on the website of the 43rd Center for Combat Operations and Flight Crew Retraining, he rose to the rank of deputy chief of the center and participated in the Victory Day Parade in Moscow.

According to leaks examined by the publication “Agency,” the general has been living in the Saratov region since at least 2024. The leaks mention an apartment in Engels, as well as a house in the village of Probuzhdenie, which he listed when signing up for wired internet in 2025.

Back in 2023, the “OSINT Bees” project reported that Varpakhovich’s eldest son, Vladislav, died at a military unit in Ryazan after being shot in the head with an automatic rifle. According to the project, a psychological and psychiatric evaluation indicated that the deceased was in a severe emotional state and experiencing internal conflict.

“The Agency” reports that on Thursday, journalists were unable to contact either Varpahovich himself or his relatives. According to the publication, the general last communicated via Telegram on Wednesday evening.
