Why does the U.S. president keep making concessions to Putin?
The relationship between U.S. President Donald Trump and Putin remains one of the greatest mysteries of world politics. Despite the U.S. president’s claims that he has no ties to Russia, his behavior toward the Russian leader continues to raise questions, writes the British The Guardian.
Several reasons have been put forward to explain Trump’s stance—ranging from the pro-Russia sentiments of some MAGA supporters to his apparent admiration for strong authoritarian leaders.
There is also a more negative explanation—the possibility of compromising information. Trump has visited the USSR and Russia on multiple occasions, including in Moscow in 1987 and in 2013 during the “Miss Universe” pageant. According to a U.S. Senate committee report, Russian intelligence agencies may have been monitoring him.
“If Trump were a Russian agent, what exactly would he be doing differently?”—this is the question Garry Kasparov uses as an argument in the debate over the U.S. president’s possible ties to the Kremlin.
However, the actual consequences of Trump’s policies may be far more important than the very definition of “Russian agent.”
Since 2025, Washington has halted direct military aid to Kyiv, has publicly clashed with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, and has repeatedly made statements that align with the Kremlin’s position. At the same time, the U.S. is refusing to supply Ukraine with additional “Patriot” systems—a key defense against Russian ballistic missiles.
Russia, meanwhile, continues to launch massive strikes on Kyiv. Ukrainian forces are responding with long-range attacks, but the shortage of air and missile defense capabilities remains one of the main problems.
“Whether Trump is a Russian asset or not—he isn’t doing enough to stop this horror,” write the authors of The Guardian.
