Bild: The Russian Consulate In Bonn Was A "Hotbed" Of Spies

Germany's decision to close the Russian Consulate General in Bonn is linked not only to an attempt sabotage at Leipzig Airport. There is evidence that the diplomatic consulate may have been used by Russian intelligence agencies for espionage activities.

The publication cites internal information from sources in Brussels. According to this information, approximately 15–20 Russian agents may have been working at the Russian consulate in Bonn, posing as diplomatic staff.

According to Bild, these individuals were in fact working for Russian intelligence agencies—the Foreign Intelligence Service (SVR), the Federal Security Service (FSB), and the Main Intelligence Directorate (GRU).

Thus, according to the publication, the consulate may have served as a base for Russian intelligence operations in Europe.

The consulate may have been used for hybrid operations

According to Bild, European diplomats consider the Russian consulate in Bonn a hub for hybrid operations.

In other words, the campaigns coordinated from there were directed not only against Germany. Among the targets cited are the Benelux countries, European Union institutions, and NATO headquarters in Belgium.

That is precisely why, according to the publication’s sources, Berlin’s decision to close the consulate general should not be viewed solely as a symbolic response to the attempted sabotage at Leipzig Airport.
