The U.S. president's statements could cost the Republicans their majority in Congress.

Three weeks before the U.S. midterm elections, U.S. President Donald Trump took a series of steps in Moscow’s favor, sparking outrage not only among Democrats but also among members of his own party, according to Axios.

Just five days after his conversation with Putin, Trump announced a deal to supply Russian diesel fuel, threatened Ukraine with a change in leadership, announced an energy truce—of which Kyiv was unaware—and dismissed reports of Moscow’s aid to Iran. At the same time, Russian strikes on Ukrainian energy infrastructure have not ceased.

The diesel deal involves easing sanctions against Russian shipments. Trump hopes this will lower fuel prices in the U.S., but analysts doubt that the additional volumes will have a significant impact on the market.

The decision sparked a sharp reaction in Congress. Republican senators called the agreement a “betrayal” and a “gift to our enemy,” fearing that revenue from fuel sales would help the Kremlin finance the war against Ukraine.

The political risks for Trump are particularly high in the run-up to the election. According to a YouGov poll, 81% of Americans who voted for him in 2024 view Putin unfavorably.

“The benefits for Russia are obvious. It is far less clear what these concessions offer American security, European allies, or Trump himself,” notes Axios.

The Republicans’ loss of their majority in Congress could paralyze the president’s legislative agenda and pave the way for new investigations. However, according to the publication, Trump is acting contrary to the growing political risks, guided by his own instincts.
