A High-profile Bill To Ban Diesel Deals With Russia Was Introduced In The U.S. Congress

Trump's agreements with Putin have drawn criticism from both Republicans and Democrats.

Democratic Congressman Gregory Mix has introduced a bipartisan bill aimed at blocking U.S. President Donald Trump’s agreement with Moscow to purchase Russian diesel fuel. This was reported by Politico.

The “Prohibiting Corrupt Oil Deals with Russia Act” calls for the revocation of a general license issued by the U.S. Department of the Treasury that authorizes the sale and import of Russian diesel fuel into the United States through April 2027.

Mix’s initiative was supported by 16 Democratic co-sponsors. Among them was Congressman Jim Costa, who on Thursday, October 15, led a bipartisan appeal to Trump calling for the cancellation of the diesel fuel agreement with Russia and the imposition of new sanctions in accordance with the Lindsey Graham Act, signed last month. Republican <>Don Bacon, who frequently criticizes Trump, is also listed among the bill’s co-sponsors.

“This agreement will not lower costs for the American people, who are already paying for Trump’s failed war with Iran. It will give (Russian dictator Vladimir—ed.) Putin millions of dollars so that he can continue killing Ukrainian citizens with impunity,” Mix said.

In addition to prohibiting the U.S. Department of the Treasury from issuing licenses to companies to purchase Russian diesel fuel, the bill calls for blocking investments by the U.S. International Development Finance Corporation (DFC) in the Russian energy sector.

This year, the Trump administration also issued a temporary license authorizing the sale of Russian crude oil that had already been loaded onto tankers in order to increase supplies to the global market. Mix’s bill is aimed at this license and others like it.

According to the American Automobile Association, as of Friday, the average price of diesel fuel in the U.S. was about $6.33 per gallon. Experts note that the volume of diesel fuel that, according to Trump, Russia will bring to the market is insufficient to significantly affect prices.
